Joe Manger is a photographer from Leicester who exclusively uses 35mm film for his work, which he processes by hand. His small exhibition for 2017’s Handmade Festival is called “High Life, Low Life”, and has been produced in conjunction with local analogue photography group, Leicester Lo-Fi
This exhibition comprises a selection of photographs taken from journeys in predominantly Buddhist countries in South Asia, particularly Nepal after the recent earthquake, alongside photographs from here in the UK. The idea of this work is to illustrate and compare aspects of life in the East and West such as spirituality and the lack thereof, our attitudes towards life, towards ourselves and each other and what we hold dear, and how we feel about our respective lot. It explores the idea of whether, with our immense wealth and privileged position in the world as Westerners, we are necessarily living the high life.
