Frequently Asked Questions

What is Handmade?
Handmade is a multi-venue metropolitan music and arts festival held in Leicester UK. In 2019 it takes place as a one day event on Sunday 5th May with ten stages throughout the city.

The festival was born in 2013 and is put together by several of Leicester’s independent promoters and venue operators from The Cookie, Firebug and The Robot Needs Home Collective.

When does Handmade open / close?
Box Office opens at midday on Sunday 5th May and our after parties run until 4am.

Where do i pick up my wristband?
Box Office / Wristband Exchange will be located downstairs in Firebug, 1 Millstone Lane, Leicester, LE1 5JN.

Can I buy a ticket on the day?
Unless the festival sells out, tickets will be available from the wristband exchange point in Firebug (1 Millstone Lane, Leicester, LE15JN) on the day of the event. These tickets will be more expensive than buying in advance.

Are there any age restrictions?
All venues are 8+ (under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult) until 9pm, Whereapon some of our city centre spaces will be 18+ only. Most of our larger venues will remain 8+.

The following venues will be 18+ after 9pm
– Dryden Street Social
– The Cookie
– Firebug
– The Shed

What happens if a venue is full for a band I want to see?
Unfortunately this is a possible issue with any multi-venue festival, though we are working hard with our programming to minimise potential bottle necks throughout the day. If a venue reaches capacity it will operate a one-in-one-out door policy until it is no longer at capacity.

We strongly advise arriving early for bands you particularly want to see.

Can I camp?
Handmade is a metropolitan music festival and as such does not have any camping areas. There are a tonne of good, affordable hotels scattered throughout Leicester.

Can I bring my own food and drink?
Most venues will operate searches at the door and will not allow you to bring your own food and drink on to the premises. All venues will have alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks available to purchase, and many serve hot food. There are also many other options available throughout the city to suit all budgets.

Can I bring a bag?
Due to government advise on major events some venues won’t permit bags larger than a laptop bag, or eastpack style bag, on to their premises and may not be able to accommodate them in cloakrooms. Please travel as light as possible

What’s the best way to get to the Festival?
Parking is limited within Leicester city centre so we advise travelling to the festival using public transport. For those travelling from outside Leicester there are fast, frequent services from London, Derby, Nottingham, Sheffield and cities in-between using East Midlands Trains, and from Birmingham, Peterborough and Stansted Airport using Midland Mainline. National Express Coach routes run to Leicester from all over the UK.

How can I travel between venues?
All the venues are easy walking distance from each other.

There is a complimentary bus service for wristband holders running throughout the day. More details will be published in our app for iPhone and Android in the run up to the festival.

Are the venues accessible?
Many of the Handmade venues (including the main stage at O2 Academy Leicester) have step free access and good provision for disabled audience members, but some venues do have restricted access. We’re collating the access information for all the venues here along with information about complimentary carer tickets.

How do I apply to play the festival?
Handmade does not accept applications to play. The festival organisers are promoters all year round and have their ears to the ground for new music 365 days a year. They each have their own particular tastes and areas of expertise and the best advice we can give you is to get on their radar in general.

Can I volunteer at the festival?
Handmade needs a small number of volunteers to help the festival happen each year. If you’d like to get involved email info@handmadefestival.co.uk and we’ll be in touch.

Do you need food traders?
Handmade occasionally hosts food traders within some of it’s venue spaces. If you’d like to apply please email info@handmadefestival.co.uk and we’ll be in touch.
