Venue Profile: The Y Theatre
Between now and the festival we’re going to take a look at some of Leicester’s venues that are joining Handmade this year. We spoke to The Y as they prepare for their first Handmade.
Who are you and what do you do?
We are The Y Theatre, and we host a range of events including music, theatre and comedy throughout the year.
When did you open and what’s the story behind the venue opening?
The Theatre opened in 1900 as part of the Leicester YMCA and we’ve been putting on shows ever since!
What are some memorable gigs you’ve had through the years?
Our big name favourites have to be The Rifles, John Boden, Foy Vance and Miles Hunt but we are especially passionate about our local talent: Grace Petrie, Martha Bean, Jersey Budd, Kermes, Maybeshewill.
What are you most looking forward to at Handmade this year?
Joining the fantastic team of venues that support this exciting festival for the first time!
Why do you think Handmade is important for Leicester?
Leicester has such a vibrant cultural scene and music plays a huge part of that. Handmade places local artists on the same platform as national and international talent and that is a huge opportunity.
What do you think is great about Leicester’s arts community?
It’s such a varied, melting-pot of talent with everyone supporting each other. It’s easy to get into a silo of your own art form but there’s so much collaboration across the whole community.
