Our Handmade: Photography Curator David Wilson Clarke

Hello Dave. What have you been doing for Handmade this year?
Curating several photography exhibitions that are at O2 and also other locations (The Orange Tree). Also rounding up a load of photographers, pointing them at the festival, and shouting ’Shoot!’.
What makes the festival special for you?
Most festivals are local, or national. Handmade is a bit of both. It has personal touches which show that it’s run by passionate people. It’s also immensely fun. The art, photography, performance and film will be more noticeable, this year. These communities cross over a lot in Leicester, so it makes sense for them all to be represented at Handmade.
What’s your favourite memory of previous handmade years?
T E Morris’s set in front of Leicester Castle. It was an unusual setting, but was a little jewel in the whole proceedings. A man walked behind Tom playing his set, confused by the what was going on. Just stared straight ahead and walked through. Lovely.
Can you pick three acts are you most excited about seeing at this years festival and why?
I want to see if combination of arts works together at a festival, I sincerely hope it does. I’m not going to give 3 bands because, for me, festivals are about suprises. Wandering around, hearing a sound in the distance, walking up to a stage, and finding your new favourite band. That’s why, as a photographer, I sometimes stop shooting and just watch and listen.
