Celebrating their twentieth anniversary this year by releasing tenth studio album Nowhere Now Here, the Tokyo quintet have often been described as post-rock but have rejected pigeonholing as “the music needs to transcend genre to be meaningful”. They would favour seeing their effects-heavy instrumental compositions as in the experimental classical and avant-rock lineages, borrowing from full orchestral works and minimalism alike, their live shows pushing the raw intensity and emotional dynamics as far as they can. Mono understandably don’t play a lot of UK festivals, especially those outside leftfield concerns, so this should be a unique experience.
